ORFC 24 vs 5 Eastleigh – Hants Plate Semi-Final
The Overton U14s were victorious in a tense Hampshire Shield semi-final match against Eastleigh on Sunday. The team, which has had a frustrating season so far with a spate of injuries and tough matches pulled it all together to beat Eastleigh for the second time and progress to yet another final. Eastleigh turned up with a full squad and a full complement of parents, physically and visually outnumbering Overton with their horizontally-striped shirts making the boys look even bigger. However, size isn’t everything and after soaking up some early pressure, Adam Kizun shook off a number of tackles and held on to the ball to cross the line for Overton’s first try, which wasn’t converted. The rest of the first half was very even, and despite some varied and imaginative play from Overton including a near-try from Finn Poole, and powerful forward play from Eastleigh; the boys went in with just a 5-0 lead at half time.
In the second half things opened up. Overton scored first through Doug Armes, which he also converted: Eastleigh responding quickly with an unconverted try. It all looked as if it was going to be really tense, but Harry Lockett scored after a powerful run and Doug Armes scored and converted a second breakthrough try from a quickly taken penalty. Overton were really turning it on now, with scrum half Harry King’s vision and distribution allowing plenty of opportunities to be created, and Kieron Bush’s ferocious tackling preventing Eastleigh from ever getting back into the game. Both sides had opportunities for further scores, but it ended up at 24-5.
Both sides really enjoyed the game. Harry Lockett was man of the match and both teams sat down for one of Viktoria’s fantastic goulashes. The boys were really well-supported and spectators from other Overton age groups provided real atmosphere. This squad has reached yet another final and we now wait to see if the boys are playing Farnborough or Fareham Heathens on 29th March.
From all of us at Overton, well done ORFC U14s!!!
