Matchday - Sat 7th Oct 2017 - HOME DOUBLE HEADER

ORFC 1XV Vs Millbrook 1XV - Hants Div 1
ORFC 2XV Vs Havant 'A' - Solent Div 2

KO: 1500hrs

Bar is open !

After off the pitch activities in the last week or so (Congrats to Shannon and Adriaan Lottering on birth of baby Arthur and well done and thank you to everyone attending the fund raising quiz evening midweek), it's back to business today with a league double header at home.

ORFC 1XV have a big ask today. They host leaders Millbrook, a team that put 86 points on Isle of Wight last week, the same team that thumped Os on the island the week before.

The weather looks set to stay dry and key players come back into the side. There is no doubt this is a test for Os but they should take heart that Millbrook have only narrowly beaten mainland opposition so far, their big points difference the sacrifice only of island teams.

Again, we look to the pack. If Os can get possession, they certainly have the necessary pace and skills outside to cause Millbrook problems.

After a winning start, ORFC 2XV today also face possibly their biggest test this season so far. Havant thumped Stoneham last week and Os beat Totts. Havant will be looking to redress the balance after last season's single encounter at this same ground.

If Os can muster enough players together then this should be a good tough encounter and either side is capable to taking the spoils.

Good luck Os from all at the Club.

Tottonians RFC 3XV Vs ORFC 2XV - Solent 2

KO: 1500hrs

ORFC 2XV Inglorious today hit the road for their second league game of the season after their humbling of Alresford at home last week. They travel to Tottonians RFC to play their 3XV, the home side having lost their two opening fixtures to Petersfield and Stoneham.

After being beaten down there last season, Os will be looking to make amends today.

Tomorrow the Minis section of the Club travels to New Milton for its first of 5 tournaments in the space of 7 weeks.

Good luck to all teams this weekend.

Match Report - Sat 23rd Sept

Mixed fortunes last Saturday as 1s delayed by M3 and 2s open league campaign.

ORFC 1XV eventually made it to the Isle of Wight last week in spite of the M3 closure to play IOW RFC 1XV. With key players out and a 8 hour round trip this was always going to be a tough ask and so it proved.

Story of the day really was that Os just couldn't get their hands on the ball and IoW took advantage of two yellow cards for the visitors. Os battled in defence and claimed consolation near the end but the beers were losers ones this time, final score 51-5.

This was not their day but they will have better days. Their next big test is at home on 7th Oct to leaders Millbrook.

ORFC 2XV had a far different day. The sun came out and the battle scarred oldies were joined by a few new youngies. Alresford 2XV came early, warmed up and were ready to beat the home side. The Inglorious had other ideas. They played hard, supported each other, scored some good tries and held firm in defence.

There is no doubt Os played well and Alresford would have returned home a little surprised on the end of a 44-7 thumping. Scorers for OS: the magic that is Andy Boyd: 3, Cornell: 2, Shepperd: 1, Newcomer Dr. Barber: 1, Bowles; 1 (would have been 2 but instead a deserved Dick of the Day for 'scoring' on the 5 meter line. Rumour has it that Spinks is relieved this happens to other players as well).

Matchday – Sat 23rd Sept 2017 – HOME & AWAY

Isle of Wight Vs ORFC 1XV – Hants Div 1
ORFC 2XV Vs Alresford 2XV – Solent Div 2

KO: 1500hrs

Overton 1st team take to the road and ferry today to make their first of three trips to the island this season. After last week’s win at home to Alresford, this is an altogether different proposition. Trips to the island make these an all day affair and it takes a different mindset and strong will to reach the necessary level of focus come kick off at 3pm.

Shorn of key players this week including Captain Buttle and Vice Captain Sumpter, Os travel under last season’s Captain Harper. With Overton 2s also playing they only travel with 16. This will be a test. That said, Isle of Wight have played only one league game so far, losing narrowly away to Alresford, a team Os all but thumped at home last week. Os should also remember their own thrashing of the Isle of Wight last season in the cup.

Though they travel light this is still a strong side, the Sims Bull partnership will create plenty of opportunity, strength in the pack is added through Driver and Kentell and youngsters Kerr and Blunden have good rugby brains. The weather is set for running rugby. There is no reason the beers on the ferry back should not be winners’ ones.

Overton 2s Inglorious Busterds today start their league campaign. They host new comers to this league Alresford 2s, whose 1XV was beaten at Lavertoke Park Rugby Ground last week. Captain Paul Bond has a job on his hands. The senior squad has already been hit by injuries and inconvenient unavailability will see Os put out a makeshift side today.

Of course, that is not a new story for this Club and despite similar struggles in previous seasons, they still compete and finished 3rd in this league last season. Today will need to see some of the old part time vets recovering their boots from the back of the shed and any youngsters that have not gone to the island will be desperately needed.

Match Report - Sat 16th Sept 2017

ORFC 1XV 29-20 Alresford 1XV

On a sunny afternoon, late withdrawals saw Gough Jr and Croker replaced by Norris and Bond. Both teams were out early warming up for this tie between last season’s first and second place in Hants 2. It was a tight and frantic opening ten minutes which saw Os making errors and conceding a turnover in the middle of the park. Into their 22m Os collapsed a maul but Alresford missed the shot at goal.

Two minutes later and again Os infringing, this time offside in the backline. Alresford made the kick 0-3. Two minutes later Os missed an opportunity, losing their own lineout next to the Alresford tryline. Play carried on at pace and then a breakthrough for Overton. An interception from Ollie Maxwell saw him burst to within 5 metres, the ball was recycled, Captain Els Buttle took it on, fly half Ben Bull onto Tom Jolley who went in for the try. Missed conversion 5-3.

On 23 minutes Os were pushed off their own ruck and then conceded a penalty for a high tackle. Alresford kicked for touch and won the lineout, eventually knocking on in sight of the line with men over. Os won a free kick at the resulting scrum, Alresford shoving early, desperate not to lose the opportunity they had created.

The game continued, possession changing hands until Harper was unfortunate to knock on at the breakdown. The result was a Alresford scrum on Os 22m. Alresford again went through the hands and looked to be in down the left wing. Adrian Kok had other ideas. Cousins Maxwell and Kok were superb all afternoon and this time the latter’s tackle forcing the ball into touch.

Alresford lineout, then scrum, then Alresford penalty and Andy Milton penalised for not releasing. The Refs’ impatience with this infringement saw Milton have a yellow carded rest for ten minutes though he will feel hard done by as the second man in. Alresford opted for the scrum but once again threw away an opportunity when in Os 22m. Os took the scrum against the head and the lively Daniel Kevin at scrumhalf cleared.

On 34 mins Alresford went through the hands again and looked to break down the left wing once more. This time Kok hit two men and forced the ball to ground. The strong Dan Harms picked the ball up and sprinted 60metres to score. Missed con 10-3.

Just before the break Os broke down the right wing through Conor Norris but he was stopped short and Alresford took a penalty to touch for a dangerous boot at the breakdown. A minute later Os were penalised at the scrum for early release.

The second half continued in much the same way as the first ended apart from Os were able to lessen the penalty count against them. They grew in confidence, put phases together and another Maxwell step saw him over. Conversion added 17-3.

Os were now dominant into the famous Overton corner. Alresford were penalised for punching and from the resulting scrum flanker Dubya went around the corner, ball through the hands, Conor Norris over for the try. Missed con. 22-3

Now well on top, Os took their foot off the gas for a moment, Alresford moved the ball well and went into the corner to score. Missed con. 22-8

Os weren’t done yet. The bonus point already secured, they searched for another. This time Nat Woods on the end of Os running. Norris kicked the con. 29-8

Well on top at this point, Os will be disappointed with the last 10 minutes. Tiring and ahead they took their foot off the gas and Alresford broke away for two further tries, making the final score line a rather flattering 29-20. Flattering to Alresford that is. For most of this game they were second best. Os will need to work harder at the breakdown where they were bullied in the early stages and improve their discipline – reduce the penalty count and play for 80mins.

This is a good benchmark of what they can achieve at home. Next week brings an altogether different story - away to Isle of Wight, the first of three such trips they must make in the league this season.
